Synopsis

Explore the life of a famed Confederate general through the eyes of his nephew and cavalry commander.

This authoritative biography presents Robert E. Lee as a public leader and private man, weaving in extracts from his private letters to illuminate his thoughts on war, duty, and family. Drawing on a rich legacy of Virginia lineage and a long military career, the book traces Lee’s rise, his campaigns, and the lasting impact of his decisions on American history. While it honors his service, it also places his actions in the broader currents of the Civil War, politics, and leadership under pressure.

Two long sections frame the scope and value of the work. The first surveys Lee’s ancestry, early career, and the personal experiences that shaped him. The second follows his major campaigns, battles, and strategic choices, offering context from both sides of the conflict. Through these pages, readers gain a sense of the man behind the figure and the forces that defined his era.
  • Learn how a leading military mind shaped campaigns in Virginia and beyond.
  • See how private letters reveal Lee’s impressions, influences, and resolutions.
  • Discover the relationships and events that framed his leadership during the Civil War.
  • Understand the historical context that gave rise to one of America’s most enduring legacies.
Ideal for readers of Civil War history, military biography, and 19th‑century American leadership.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The occasion has been embraced to express the universal regret that General Lee never wrote anything concerning his career and campaigns. His statements would have settled conflicting opinions on all subjects contained therein. We know that it was his intention to record the deeds of his soldiers, but not to write his personal memoirs. He waited for a convenient season, and waited too long. In this volume the attempt has been made to imperfectly supply the great desire to have something from Robert E. Lee spen, by introducing, at the periods referred to, such extracts from his private letters as would be of general interest. He is thus made, for the first time, to give his impressions and opinions on most of the great events with which he was so closely connected. Except in a few instances, the scope of the book has not permitted the tactical details of the battlefield, or the mention by name of many of the officers and organizations whose superb courage contributed to their commanders fame.
