Unraveling logic as a study of qualities and mind, this edition surveys Jevons’ Pure Logic and its critique of other theories. It presents a clear account of why Jevons separates logic from concrete existence and why he treats all judgments as non-existential. The text also situates his ideas in dialogue with Mill, Boole, and other English thinkers, offering a window into the debates that shaped modern logic.
In these pages you’ll explore how the author argues for a logic of quality, the role of comprehension versus extension, and the claim that logic deals with hypothetical rather than actual objects. The material includes discussion of foundational axioms, the relation between pure thought and concrete reasoning, and the practical implications for interpretation and analysis. It also introduces a distinctive mechanical model used to illustrate logical classification, showing how abstract ideas can be represented in a concrete setup.

The several works and papers that have been included fall into two distinctly marked groups, corresponding on the whole to the difference in time of their composition, and presenting at first sight no very clear indi cation of common aim or principle. The first group consists of independently published works, the Pure Logic and theS ubstitution of Similars, with certain papers in which the general principles of the authors logical theory, stated in their most mature form in his main logical works, the Principles of Science and theS tudies in Deductive Logic, are carried out in certain special directions. In the second group appear such portions of a general examination of J. S. Mill sphilosophy as had been completed at the date of the authors death. The essays in the first group seem to claim a place in a permanent collection of the authors works, partly from the historic importance that must always attach to them, partly by reason of the relative fulness of discussion which they extend to certain fundamental and characteristic ideas in the general view of logic contained in them. They are reprinted as they originally appeared, with only the correction of one or two obvious misprints.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a groundbreaking exploration of logic, presented through a unique lens that focuses on the qualitative aspects of thought. The author challenges conventional approaches to logic, which often conflate the qualitative and quantitative dimensions of meaning. By separating these two aspects, the author presents a pure, or formal, logic based entirely on the comparison of qualities and their sameness or difference. The book delves into the core concepts of logic, examining terms, propositions, and the process of inference. It highlights the authorââ â¢s distinctive view that all reasoning is deductive in nature, emphasizing the importance of general propositions and their role in establishing certainty. This approach contrasts sharply with the prevailing view of the time, which emphasized inductive reasoning and the accumulation of empirical data as the foundation of knowledge. The authorââ â¢s exploration of these fundamental principles leads to a critical examination of the work of John Stuart Mill, a leading figure in the philosophy of the era. The book highlights the inconsistencies and limitations in Millââ â¢s approach to logic, arguing that his system ultimately fails to provide a sound foundation for understanding the nature of knowledge and reasoning. This book offers a compelling alternative, one that resonates with the rich tradition of philosophical inquiry into the foundations of logic and offers profound insights into the nature of thought and knowledge.
