Synopsis

PRACTICAL TALKS BY AN ASTRONOMER . NAVIGATION AT SEA A SHORT time ago the writer had occasion to rummage among the archives of the Royal Astronomical Society in London, to consult, if possible) the original manuscripts left by one ~tephen Groombridge, an English astronomer of the good old days, who died in 1832. I t was known that they had been filed away about a generation ago, by the late Sir George .l.iry, who was Astronomer Royal of England between the years 1835 and 1881. After a long search, a large and dusty box was found and opened. I t was filled with documents, of which the topmost was in Sir George's own handwriting, and began substantially as follows: " List of articles within this box. (( No. I) This list, UN o. 2" e t c., e tc".

Biographie de l'auteur

Harold Jacoby, born in New York City, USA, was an American astronomer known for the determination of accurate star positions from the measurement of photographic plates. He was also was significant in providing entry-level employment for women astronomers in the early twentieth century. He attended Columbia University, earning his AB in 1885 and Ph.D. in 1896. He became an assistant in geodesy and practical astronomy at Columbia 3 years after completing his doctoral work. However, the turning point of his early career came when he joined the 1889 American expedition that sailed aboard the USS Pensacola to observe a solar eclipse from Cape Ledo, Angola.
