Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book traces the life and times of Robespierre, a key figure in the French Revolution. As a young lawyer, Robespierre was an advocate for the oppressed. His firm belief in the principles of the Enlightenment, particularly the Social Contract by Rousseau, led him to question the very foundations of the French monarchy. In the nascent republic, Robespierre's popularity grew as he spoke out against corruption and for a more democratic society. However, his belief in the necessity to use violence against counter-revolutionaries and his role in the Reign of Terror forever tarnished his legacy. This book provides an in-depth examination of Robespierre's life and his pivotal role in the dramatic events of the French Revolution.
