Excerpt from The Evolution of Religion, Vol. 12: An Anthropological Study
A Small book on a great and difficult subject must explain and apologise for itself, especially if it cannot claim a raison d'etre as a handbook for beginners. Having accepted the stimulating invitation to give in the spring of this year a short series of lectures for the Hibbert Trust on some subject belonging to the department of comparative religion, I felt that it was desirable to avoid those topics that had been appropriated by former lecturers; and also that the Trustees, as well as the audience, deserved that what the lecturer put forth should embody the results of some personal and original study.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the comparative study of religions, an increasingly urgent topic due to our growing global connectivity. The author argues that the subject should be broadened from its current focus on savage anthropology to include adjacent disciplines, such as archaeology, history, and philology, to gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of religious thought and practice. The author suggests that many complex, advanced religions may share a common origin in the distant past, and that in order to understand the defining characteristics of the worldâs major religions, it is necessary to explore the historical and cultural milieu that gave rise to them. To illustrate the benefits of this approach, the author provides examples from Christianity, suggesting that its essential features and many of its core beliefs may have been influenced by earlier Mediterranean religions. This interdisciplinary approach should help scholars and general readers alike to better appreciate the profound influence religion has had on the evolution of human consciousness and society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
