9781440066139: Election By Lot at Athens (Classic Reprint)

Synopsis

How Athens ran a democracy with careful balance between chance and control.

This book explains how the lot, not elections, shaped most public offices in Athens. It also looks at exceptional commissions that handled large public works and special tasks, from temple rebuilding to fortifications. The discussion shows how the state kept power open to citizens while ensuring effective management of finances, building, and administration.

  • How offices chosen by lot stayed orderly, businesslike, and obedient to the Assembly

  • How commissions for major projects operated with broader discretion than ordinary posts

  • Why finance and justice had no elected officers, and how money decisions were made

  • How these arrangements supported a democratic system without slipping into oligarchy

Ideal for readers interested in ancient democracy, Athens’ administrative life, and the practical workings behind political theory.
