A sharp, accessible look at Max Beerbohm through Bohun Lynch's perspective. This study surveys the critic's view of Beerbohm’s work, tracing how his essays and wit shaped his lasting place in literary life.
Drawing on the book’s examination of And Even Now and related writings, the pages explore how Beerbohm blends humanity, satire, and a distinctive voice. It weighs the reception of his shifting tone—from flippant to more reflective—without spoiling the pleasures of his humor or the complexity of his ideas.
Readers will gain a clearer sense of the author’s approach to criticism, the balance of comedy and insight, and the way particular essays illuminate his craft. The analysis stays grounded in specific pieces, offering context while avoiding unnecessary speculation.
Ideal for readers of literary criticism and fans of Beerbohm’s wit.

Mr. Beerbohm. I suggested that he might lend me a page of his corrected MS. to reproduce in facsimile. (T oshow readers how an author goes to work may not be strictly relevant to an appreciation of that works result, to be sure, but it is legitimately interesting.) I urged that, probably, there were in his possession caricatures as yet unpublished and unexhibited which might be published here ;finally and how well he must have known that this was coming I asked him whether he would make a caricature of himself, special to the occasion, for a frontispiece. This was his reply :VILLINO CHIARO, RAPALLO. June 18, 1921. DEAR BOHUN LYNCH, The sky is very blue here this morning, as indeed it usually is, and your letter came like a bolt from it. After I had read the first 2or 3lines I instinctively sat down, somewhat blasted, I then read the whole letter manfully. And now I take up my pen.
