This fascinating book deeply explores the development of the Messianic Idea in religion and culture. The author asserts its origins in man's innate fears, interdependence, and aspiration for happiness, giving rise to a comprehensive mythos. Over many epochs, this material took diverse forms, surfacing in many global cultures. By harnessing literary, anthropological, and scriptural evidences, the author masterfully maps the evolution of this central religious concept. The work significantly highlights the impact of spiritual enlightenment on these mythic foundations, tracing how ancient narratives were subtly adapted to convey profound spiritual truths. Ultimately, this book provides a novel perspective on the Messianic Idea, demonstrating how it has permeated religious thought and shaped human history.

In its present form the work differs slightly from that in which it was originally presented. The author desires to express his thanks to theD ivinity Professors for having permitted him to make the following alterations :A ll Hebrew quotations have been trans lated, and isolated Hebrew words either trans literated or translated ;all quotations from classical writings, as well as those from modern French and German works, have likewise been translated. By this means it was thought that the book might be made more acceptable to the general reader. In dealing with a subject which covers such a wide area as theM essianic I dea, it is impossible always to give reasons for statements which are made ;a certain amount of knowledge on the part of the reader must be assumed.
