How humankind learned to think beyond survival—and why the story still matters today.
This edition surveys the long arc of civilization, from early life to the rise of science and modern life. It frames civilization as a developing, relative idea, not a fixed standard, and explains why progress is uneven across eras and cultures. The book invites readers to see how social values, knowledge, and institutions interact to shape our world.
Through chapters on ancient Crete, Egypt, Babylon, and beyond, it traces how mighty empires influenced one another and how ideas about life, law, and learning traveled across time. It also weighs big questions about what counts as real progress and how science reshapes society, without simplifying complex histories.
Ideal for readers of history and social thought who want a clear, big-picture look at where we came from and where we might go next.

This little book is a sequel toT he AB Gof Evolution which was published last year. In that work I told, in outline, the story of the evolution of the universe, and particularly the evolution of life on the earth ;and at the close I briefly described how the appearance of man crowned the long ages of earlier struggle. Unfortunately, the limits of the work, which was merely a short and simple account, for people of little leisure, of the story of evolution, prevented me from enlarging upon the subject just when it became most interesting. The predominant feeling of our troubled age is social and humanitarian. We want to understand human life: to learn its meaning, its laws, its destiny. We feel that the pitiless struggles of the past cannot be the model of the present; that an entirely new phase of evolution has opened on this planet.

The author argues that civilization emerged when groups of people with contrasting cultures and ideas came together, leading to a clash that ignited progress. This dynamic is explored through the lens of ancient Crete, Egypt, and Babylonia â" three early centers of civilization that flourished due to their unique geographical positions as melting pots of diverse populations. The book delves into the remarkable achievements and sophisticated cultures of these ancient societies, revealing how they laid the groundwork for the development of art, science, and social organization.
