Synopsis

How language reshaped our view of ancient India

In this landmark study, Hermann Oldenberg explains how the study of Sanskrit and the Veda transformed our understanding of early Indian religion and law. It traces the rise of modern philology and its impact on how scholars read ancient texts, myths, and legal codes.

This edition surveys the beginnings of Sanskrit scholarship, the role of Sir William Jones, and the challenges of translating Indian law and literature. It also explains how ethnology and comparative methods revealed new guidance for interpreting the Veda beyond older assumptions, and what this means for ancient Indian civilization.
  • Learn how philology, law, and religious ideas intersected in early Indian studies
  • See how translations and cross-cultural comparison changed views of Vedic culture
  • Explore the shift from a single, primitive interpretation to a broader, evidence-based view
  • Understand the influence of ethnology on how we study ancient rites and myths
Ideal for readers curious about the history of language study, ancient India, and how scholars reframe our knowledge of the Veda and its place in world civilization.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Sanskrit, the science of the antiquities of I ndia, is about a century old. It was in the year 1784 that a number of men acting inC alcutta as judges or administrative officers of theE astI ndia Company, formed themselves into a scientific society, the Asiatic Society. We may say that the founding of the Asiatic Society was contemporaneous with the rise of a new branch of historical inquiry, the possibility of which preceding generations had barely or never thought of. Englishmen began the work ;soon it was taken up by other nations; and in the course of time, in a much greater degree than is the case with the study of hieroglyphic and cuneiform inscriptions, it has become ever more distinctly a branch of inquiry peculiarly German. The little band of workers who are busy in the workshops of this department of science, have not been accustomed to have the eyes of other men turned upon their doings their successes and failures. But, in spite, nay, rather in consequence of this, it is right that an attempt should be made to invite even the most disinterested to an inspection of these places of industry, and to point out, piece by piece, the work, or at least part of the work, that has been done there.
