Synopsis

Uncover how Islamic thinkers reshaped early philosophy and bridged worlds. This concise, scholarly work surveys a pivotal era in which Muslim scholars and translators preserved, expanded, and reinterpreted Aristotle and Plato. It traces the rise of distinct intellectual currents, from the logical to the metaphysical, and shows how these ideas traveled to Europe and influenced scholastic thought.

The book examines key figures such as Kindi, Farabi, Ibn Sina, and Ibn Roshd, and explains how their questions about knowledge, reality, and the divine shaped later debates in the Christian world. It also highlights the crucial role of translation networks in Spain and the broader medieval Islamic world, and how intellectual exchange led to new ways of thinking about science, religion, and philosophy.

What you’ll find inside:

  • Introductions to major schools and the differences between natural philosophy, logic, and metaphysics in the Islamic world.

  • Profiles of influential thinkers and how their ideas related to Aristotle and Plato.

  • A clear account of how Islamic philosophy reached Europe and helped form medieval scholasticism.

  • Context on how translation efforts and cross-cultural exchange shaped intellectual history.

Ideal for readers of history, philosophy, and religious studies who want a grounded, accessible overview of a transformative period.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The following is the first attempt which has been made, since the appearance of Munk sexcellent sketch l, to present in connected form aH istory of Philosophy in I slam. This work of mine may therefore be regarded as a fresh initiation, -not a completion of such a task. I could not know of all that had been done by others, in the way of preliminary study in this field; and when I did know of the existence of such material, it WHS not always accessible to me. As for manuscript assistance, it was only in exceptional cases that this was at my disposal. Conforming to the conditions which I had to meet, I have in the following account refrained from stating my authorities. But anything which I may have taken over, nearly word for word or without testing it, I have marked in foot-references. For the rest, I deeply regret that 1cannot duly indicate at present how much I owe, as regards appreciation of the sources, to men likeD ieterici, de Goeje, Goldziher, Houtsma, A ug. Muller, Munk, Noldeke, Renan, Snouck Hurgronje, van Vloten, and many, many others. Since the completion of this volume an interesting monograph on I bnS ina 3has appeared, which farther extends 1S.
