Excerpt from Carlo Crivelli
I would add that the publishers of this volume, in order to make it as complete as possible, arranged with Mr Houghton of Florence, at considerable ex pense, to go to the Marches and photograph many pictures which have never before been reproduced.

Up to the present time the account in Messrs Crowe and Cavalcaselle s History has remained the most complete treatment of the painter, and in its main features their careful compilation leaves little to be desired. The present volume is an attempt to put together all that is known about Crivelli and his works. One great deficiency may be acknowledged at once. No additions have been made to the scanty documentary evidence about the painter which has up till now been available. It is possible that a diligent search among the archives at A scoli, and the other towns with which Crivelli was connected, might reveal some further information. For such researches I have had neither time nor opportunity. All that I have been able to ascertain is that of this nature there exists nothing obvious or known to the local authorities. In default of more original information we are under considerable obligations to A mico Ricci, who, at a time when Crivelli spictures were being scattered from their original home in the Marches, either from his own knowledge or from information which he had collected, preserved in many cases the memory of their original positions and other important facts about them.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and artistic achievements of Carlo Crivelli, a Venetian painter who left his hometown in the early stages of his career to settle in the Marches, a region in eastern Italy. The author meticulously examines Crivelliââ â¢s work to uncover the influences of his artistic upbringing and to trace the development of his distinctive style, which draws from the Byzantine tradition while embracing elements of the Paduan school. The book offers a compelling examination of Crivelliââ â¢s art within the broader context of Renaissance Italy, revealing how his choice to live and work in the less-renowned Marches allowed him to cultivate a unique artistic voice unburdened by the pressures of competing trends in other major centers. The author analyzes the subject matter, composition, and details of Crivelliââ â¢s paintings, highlighting his evolving relationship with the forms of the Venetian ancona, his predilection for rich, decorative elements, and his subtle yet discerning approach to realism. By examining the paintings themselves, the author sheds light on Crivelliââ â¢s artistic journey, providing insights into the evolution of his artistic style and the influences that shaped his unique approach to painting.
