Hidden causes of thought and madness explained in clear, accessible terms
Discover how repression, conflict, and hidden complexes help shape what we think and how we behave. This classic explores the idea that the insane mind often hides coherent patterns beneath outward chaos, and that psychology can illuminate both normal thought and mental disorder.
This work surveys foundational ideas in early psychology, showing how ideas from leading thinkers like Freud and Jung influenced views on mind and illness. It combines theoretical discussion with real‑world examples to illustrate how hidden motives drive actions, sometimes through indirect expression or rationalization. The author explains why the study of complexes and conflicts matters for understanding mental processes, both in everyday life and in cases of illness.Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.
The number of independent schools of thought existing at the present day, and the fundamental divergence in their methods of investigation, make it obviously impossible to compress such a treatise into the limits of a small volume. All that has been attempted here is the presentation of certain recent developments in abnormal psychology which have already yielded results of fundamental importance, and which seem to offer an exceptionally promising field for further investigation. An endeavour has been made to develop the subject-matter of the book in a systematic manner, so that the general principles which it is sought to establish may appear in as clear a light as possible. The adoption of the systematic method in a work of this size, however, renders a somewhat dogmatic mode of presentation inevitable.

The author emphasizes that this is not an exhaustive treatise on insanity, but rather a focused exploration of specific areas where psychological methods have yielded significant insights. The book traces the historical evolution of our understanding of mental disorders, from ancient demonological beliefs to the emergence of the modern physiological and psychological conceptions. It acknowledges the contributions of influential figures like Freud and Janet, while also presenting a distinct perspective on the subject. Central to the book's exploration is the concept of the unconscious mind and its role in shaping both normal and abnormal mental phenomena. The author examines the dynamics of conflict, repression, and projection, revealing how these processes can manifest in various forms of mental distress. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling invitation to understand the human mind in its entirety, recognizing that the boundaries between "normal" and "abnormal" are not always clear-cut.
