Synopsis

Unlock the system behind library organization with the Dewey Decimal approach. A Classification and Subject Index explains how books are classified and arranged by subject, using a uniform three‑figure class number plus optional subdivisions. This edition shows how numbers map to topics, how mnemonics aid numbering, and why practical use guides the scheme over perfect theoretical fit.

This book frames the scope and value of the classification, then walks through how to apply it in catalogs and on shelves. You’ll see how the system handles general works, cross references, and the alignment between call numbers and the content of a book. The aim is to make it easy to find, group, and compare works by subject.

  • How class, division, and section create precise subject placement

  • How extra figures extend granularity for important topics

  • How mnemonic patterns help locate subjects across languages and regions

  • How cross references and catalog conventions support quick discovery

Ideal for librarians, library students, and anyone working with cataloging or research, this edition helps you understand the logic behind the shelves and the cards. It’s a practical companion for organizing vast libraries and improving access to information.

indexes, and cross·refcrences essential to this increased usefulness, can be made
more economically than by any other method which he has been able to find.
The system was devised for cataloguing and indexing purposes, but it was

pamphlets on the shelves.
