Synopsis
THIS BOOK contains an outline of one part of the course of lectures on Applied Mechanics given by the writer at the Royal School of ~lines. I t is impossible, withi n the limits of this volumc, to present a finished sketch of the principles of Mechanics. Still something may be done. An endeavour may be made to present a comprellensive view of the science. to point out the necessity of continually referring to practice and experience, and abovc a11 to show that the relation of the theory of heat to tnechanics should be approached by the student, in his earliest inquiries, with the same carerul thought with which he will surely regard it when his knowledge and his powers have become cxtended and strengthened.
