Explore the wide world of magic and belief—how people have explained the unknown and attempted to influence events through charms, spells, and rituals. This book surveys the history, theories, and practices of magic and fetishes across cultures, offering a clear, accessible look at how these ideas shape religious and social life.
From the power of names, words, and talismans to the workings of sympathetic and private magic, the text traces how people think and act when facing the mysteries of illness, luck, love, and fate. It also examines the roles of magicians, the psychology behind magical practices, and the emergence of fetish worship as a stage in the development of religious thought.
Ideal for readers curious about the roots of ritual, belief systems, and the ways cultures interpret and engage with the unseen.

Excerpt from Magic and Fetishism
The instances of sympathetic magic as Dr. Hirn points out (32, 278) are naturally divided into two main classes which, broadly speaking, correspond to the two types of association, contiguity and similarity, and as in psychology it is often diffi cult to decide whether a given associative process has its origin in a relation of contiguity or in one of similarity, so it is often an open question to which group a given superstition is to be assigned. We will start from the facts that are simpler and easier to explain.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of magic and its role in the lives of ancient and pre-modern peoples. Examining practices across various cultures, the author explores the foundations of magic as a system of beliefs and actions based on a fundamental misunderstanding of cause and effect. The book explores the belief that imitating a desired outcome or manipulating objects connected to a person could exert control over the world. The book examines the wide range of practices associated with this belief, from using hair or nail clippings in spells, to crafting images of enemies or rain-making ceremonies, and the importance of names, words, and talismans in influencing events. The author explores the concept of "tabu," examining how these social rules and prohibitions are intricately linked to magic and the belief in the unseen forces that govern the world. The book also reveals the intriguing origins of many seemingly modern superstitions and customs, demonstrating how ancient beliefs in sympathetic magic have permeated cultural traditions throughout history. This captivating exploration provides valuable insights into the deep-seated human need for control and the enduring power of belief in a world where the unknown and unpredictable reigned supreme.
