Felix Mendelssohn: A Life in Music and Memory This engaging biography by Stephen S. Stratton traces the composer’s rise from child prodigy to leading figure in 19th‑century Europe, weaving personal detail with a vivid sense of his musical world. It covers his family background, friendships, and the demanding life of a modern musician who shaped concert life, church music, and the great works that remain central to the repertoire.
The book uses a clear, chronological structure to bring Mendelssohn’s story to life—his beginnings, key public moments, and the long arc of his career. It includes accessible portraits of his relationships, his travels, and the creative processes behind major works like Elijah and the music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, alongside the challenges he faced in a vibrant and often competitive musical era.

Although so much has been written concerning Mendelssohn, the chief part lies in the Recollections or Reminiscences of this or that individual; therefore, the reader desirous of studying the subject of Mendelssohn and his works must gather together a small library for the purpose. The present is an attempt to exhibit the whole in a concise form, with a close adherence to facts, rather than the portrayal of an ideal. I am indebted to almost the whole of the Mendelssohn literature, as detailed in the Bibliography, the quotations in every case being from the English editions. Dates those milestones of history have been verified by reference to periodicals of the time, and in this respect the present publication may be found useful. Messrs.
