Synopsis

Discover how wealth is defined and measured, and what really drives private and national prosperity.

This book explains wealth in both narrow market terms and broader human welfare, clarifying what is counted and why it matters for individuals, businesses, and nations. It surveys how market prices shape the value of land, goods, and services, and why some forms of wealth—like skill, will, and organization—end up counted differently across contexts. By tracing wages, trade, and the industrial system, it reveals how economies balance profit with social outcomes, and where misalignments can occur.

  • See how wealth and income are connected to work, skill, and productivity.
  • Learn how wages are influenced by supply, demand, and organization, not just skill.
  • Understand the role of trade, tariffs, and international flow of capital and labor.
  • Explore the broader idea of wealth that includes well-being, not just market value.
Ideal for readers of economic history, policy, and readers curious about how markets shape everyday life and long-run prosperity.

Présentation de l'éditeur

It describes the ways in which the productive powers of Labour, A bility, Land, Capital andS ociety are applied in the various trades, arts and professions, for the production of material goods and services, and the ways in which the payment for this work is regulated and carried out. No knowledge of economic facts or principles is presumed, except such as every intelligent man or woman acquires in the ordinary experience of life. So brief a presentation of so large a subject will suffer necessary defects. It will be apt to be too unqualified in statement and too dogmatic in mode of argument. It will shirk some important points of controversy. Since the line of interpretation taken here has been more fully defended in a larger volume entitled The Industrial System, I may be permitted to refer to it those readers who may wish to follow out the argument in more detail.
