Synopsis

CHAPTER XIII. (1846-47.) FORT LOUIS AXD THENCE TO ST. LOUIS. EARLV in the spring [of 1846J Mr. rv!cKenzie left on a Mackinaw boat for St. Louis. Nothing of importance took place after his departure until the Company's steamer again arrived, at its usual time, :Mr. Honore Picotte in charge. Mr. Culbertson, who went up a previol1s summer [in r8441, had burned down Fort Chardon, and gone on with his outfit, according to understanding, to build another post.1 He had selected, for that purpose, a site five or six miles above Benton, on the south side of the 1Iissouri, named it Fort Louis, and left Mr. Clark in charge. From what motive I cannot say, :Mr. Picotte wanted him removed, and on that account arrang'ed with me to go up with the outfit and take charge. I was then I Vc thus learn that the end of Fort Chardon, near Jnrlith river, and the beginning of Fort Louis, on the ~nssouri above the future Benton, were almost simultaneous, in the summer of 1844. '37
