9781440088780: The Theory of Electrons and Its Applications to the Phenomena, of Light and Radiant Heat, a Course of Lectures Delivered in Columbia, University, New York, in March and April (Classic Reprint)

Synopsis

The publication of these lectures, which I delivered inC olumbia University in the spring of 1906, has been unduly delayed, chiefly on account of my wish to give some further development to the subject, so as to present it in a connected and fairly complete form; for this reason I have not refrained from making numerous additions. Nevertheless there are several highly interesting questions, more or less belonging to the theory of electrons, which I could but slightly touch upon. I could no more than allude in a note to Voigt sT reatise on magneto-optical phenomena, and neither Planck sviews on radiation, norE instein sprinciple of relativity have received an adequate treatment. In one other respect this book will, I fear, be found very deficient. No space could be spared for a discussion of the different ways in which the fundamental principles may be established, so that, for instance, there was no opportunity to mention the important share that has been taken in the development of the theory by Larm or and Wiechert. It is with great pleasure that I express my thanks toP rofessor A. P. Wills for his kindness in reading part of the proofs, and to the publisher for the care he has bestowed on my work. Leiden, January 1909. H. A. Lorentz. In this new edition the text has been left nearly unchanged. I have confined myself to a small number of alterations and additions in the foot-notes and the appendix. Haarlem, December 1915. H. A. L.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of electrons, those tiny charged particles that play a crucial role in electricity, magnetism, and light. The author, a renowned physicist, lays out the fundamental principles of electron theory, building upon the groundbreaking work of Faraday and Maxwell. By offering a glimpse into the intricate dance of electrons within various materials, the book sheds light on diverse phenomena, from the conduction of electricity in metals to the emission and absorption of light. It even explores the intriguing connections between electron behavior and the optical properties of moving bodies. This is not merely a theoretical treatise, however. The author skillfully connects these abstract concepts to tangible observations, providing a deeper understanding of the physical world around us. By delving into the microscopic realm of electrons, this book ultimately illuminates the grand tapestry of electromagnetism and optics, revealing the hidden mechanisms that govern our everyday experiences. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781440088780_0
