Synopsis

Hook line : A candid portrait of an 18th‑century painter caught between fame and ruin.

George Morland: A Painter's Life, by Walter Gilbey, traces the rise and fall of a gifted artist in a bustling London art world. The book blends biography with a vivid sense of the pressures, debts, and exile that shaped his work and his days. It presents a life lived in public acclaim and private struggle, offering a clear view of Morland’s world and his enduring impact on British art.

  • Explore the path from early success to mounting financial trouble and the meaning of exile in that era.
  • See how Morland balanced prolific painting with a habit that affected his career and health.
  • Meet the people who stood around him—the patrons, rivals, and friends who framed his life.
  • Understand how his personal battles influenced the stories his pictures told and the reputation he left behind.
Ideal for readers of art history and biographical studies seeking a measured, accessible account of a painter whose life echoed the volatility of 18th‑century British art.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Introduction SOME years ago I undertook the pleasurable task of collecting material relative to the lives and works of some of the English artists who had made a speciality of animal painting and portraiture between 1650 and our own time. The two volumes of Animal Painters of England published in 1899, contain no mention of George Morland :space did not permit the inclusion of all artists who introduced animals into their pictures, and it appeared to me that Morland sart occupied a place by itself. It is certainly permissible to describe him as an animal painter, but Morland is much more than this. We had landscape painters and animal painters before his day, but it is generally acknowledged that he was the first to demonstrate the homely beauties of rural life in England. Morland adopted a line peculiarly his own :very many of his works owe much, in some cases all, their interest to the domestic animals he portrayed with such conspicuous ability ;but for the most part the animals he introduces are merely incident to the scene he sets before us.
