Synopsis

Garibaldi and the making of modern Italy, on the Volturno front

A definitive account of Garibaldi’s campaign from June to November 1860, showing how the Volturno operations helped shape Italy’s unification. This edition casts new light on the realities behind the popular legend and the political stakes of the Naples theater. The narrative follows Garibaldi’s bold advance, the mix of volunteers and insurrectionary bands, and the logistical roller coaster that surrounded the campaign. It situates the commander among the pressures of Naples, the Papal States, and rival Italian leaders, while detailing the terrain, troops, and choices that determined the outcome near Capua and Caserta. What you’ll experience

  • A close look at the Volturno line as a military and political front
  • Descriptions of Caserta as Garibaldi’s base and a symbol of the campaign
  • Analysis of the forces, motivations, and constraints shaping the expedition
  • Context for how this phase influenced the broader path to Italian unity
Ideal for readers of military history and readers seeking a fuller picture of the Risorgimento, this book offers a clear, evidence-based portrait of a pivotal moment in 19th-century Italy. It balances strategic detail with accessible storytelling to illuminate how a volatile mix of leaders, volunteers, and political aims converged on the Volturno front.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Garibaldi and the Thousand described the landing at Marsala and the capture of Palermo by that handful of men in May, i860. The present volume traces the course of larger military, diplomatic, and political events by which the original achievement of the Thousand led in six months to the formation of the Italian Kingdom. I have once more endeavoured, in footnotes and appendices connected with a full bibliography, to indicate to the curious my authority for any statement made in the text. But in this as in previous volumes, considerations of time and space have made it impossible to explain the nature, limit, and degree of the value to be attached in each case to each of the authorities cited in a given note. And if any student ever has enough enthusiasm to visit various public and private libraries, and so verify all the references which I have given for any one important event e.g. the Battle of Milazzo, or Garibaldi sentry into Naples he will find that the authorities which I have cited contradict each other on minor points. Volumes would be required to explain in every case why I have preferred one authority on one small point, and another on another.
