Synopsis

Bible Because commentators as a rule are not astronomers, and therefore either pass over the astronomical allusions of Scripture in silence, or else annotate them in a way which, from a scientific point of view, leaves much to be desired. Astronomical allusions in theB ible, direct and indirect, are not few in number, and, in order to bring out their full significance, need to be treated astronomically. Astronomy further gives us the power of placing ourselves to some degree in the position of the patriarchs and prophets of old. We know that the same sun and moon, stars and planets, shine upon us as shone upon A braham and Moses, David and I saiah. We can, if we will, see the unchanging heavens with their eyes, and understand their attitude towards them. It is worth while for us so to do. For the immense advances in science, made since the Canon of Holy Scripture was closed, and especially during the last three hundred years, may enable us to realize the significance of a most remarkable fact. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating intersection of astronomy and the Bible, exploring how ancient Hebrew writers viewed and interacted with the celestial world. It examines the astronomical references within the Bible, both direct and indirect, and sheds light on their significance in understanding the text. The author contrasts the ancient Hebrew perspective on the cosmos with the prevailing beliefs of surrounding civilizations. While many cultures viewed celestial bodies as objects of worship or divination, the Hebrews maintained a unique stance, recognizing them as creations of a single God and subject to consistent laws. This perspective, the author argues, laid the groundwork for the development of scientific inquiry and observation. The book delves into various astronomical phenomena mentioned in the Bible, including the creation story, the firmament, and the movements of the sun, moon, and stars. It also explores the constellations and their possible connections to biblical narratives and symbolism. Further discussion centers around the Hebrew calendar and its astronomical basis, including the Sabbath, the week, and the luni-solar year. Through its exploration of astronomical references in the Bible, this book offers valuable insights into the scientific knowledge and unique worldview of the ancient Hebrews, demonstrating their profound understanding of the cosmos and its connection to their faith.
