Présentation de l'éditeur

The Autocrat of the Breakfast-T able, was born at Cambridge, Mass., on August 29, 1809, his father, Abdiel Holmes, being a Congregationalist minister and a man of varied gifts and sincere piety. At the age of sixteen the boy Oliver was sufficiently advanced to be entered at Harvard College. Graduating there in 1829, he turned his attention to law, but soon abandoned it for the study of medicine, and took the degree of M.D. in 1836. After two or three years spent in general practice, he became Professor of Anatomy and Physiology in Dartmouth College. Feeling, however, that he was still in need of further insight and experience, before he could become a successful medical lecturer, he resigned his chair, and resumed general practice in Boston. His abilities and wide culture soon attracted notice. He made many friends among the intellectual section of the community, and played a prominent part in the social and literary life of that city. By his marriage in 1840 to Miss A melia Lee Jackson, a lady of much beauty and of many accomplishments, he still further identified himself with the best social circles of Boston, and his house became the meetingplace of all that was best in the life of the place.
