Discover how early modern pamphlets shaped politics, culture, and public debate.
This volume gathers important tracts from the later Stuart era to show how pamphlets and periodicals moved public opinion. It places writers like Sir William Petty, Daniel Defoe, and Jonathan Swift in the broader world of government, religion, and literary life, revealing the era’s lively exchange of ideas.
Readers will find a concise guide to the rise of the newspaper, the role of the pamphlet in shaping policy, and how authors used short, persuasive pieces to argue with rivals and influence readers of their time. The selections illuminate the practical and literary sides of political writing in a time of rapid change.
Ideal for readers of literary history, political culture, and early modern England who want a focused, accessible introduction to this vibrant moment.

Professor Arber svaluable English Garner to interfere in any way with his labours, beyond classifying the pieces contained in the collection in such a manner as to illustrate more fully the various topics on which they throw so much light. I have therefore contented myself with contributing to this volume an explanatory I ntroduction, leaving the text and the brief notes of the original edition as I found them. The only exception is the addition of the interesting Preface to the Eighth Volume of Defoe s Review, which completes the series, and has never before been reprinted. G. A. A.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of political tracts, essays, and pamphlets written by prominent late Stuart thinkers. It offers a glimpse into the ways in which political power was debated, defended, and critiqued in the decades following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. The ideas and arguments presented in these texts provide insight into the development of political thought during a period of profound social, economic, and political upheaval in England. The authors in this volume sought to define the proper relationship between the individual and the state, the role of religion in public life, and the best means of achieving social justice and economic prosperity. These reflections on the nature of governance and the proper relationship between the individual and the state remain highly relevant today.
