Chris Highland was an interfaith chaplain in the San Francisco Bay Area for over twenty-five years. With a degree in Philosophy and Religion from Seattle Pacific University and a Master of Divinity degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary he was ordained as a minister in 1987. He was a special education instructor and chaplain with adults for six years before serving as chaplain for ten years with the Interfaith Jail Chaplaincy and another decade with the Interfaith Street Chaplaincy in Marin County, California. He was Parish Associate of St. Luke Presbyterian Church in San Rafael, California for ten years. For reasons of conscience he left his christian ordination in 2001. His published works include: Meditations of John Muir: Nature's Temple; Meditations of Henry David Thoreau: A Light in the Woods; Meditations of Ralph Waldo Emerson: Toward a Green Future; Meditations of Walt Whitman: Earth, My Likeness; Meditations of Margaret Fuller: The Inner Stream; Meditations of John Burroughs: Nature is Home; Life After Faith; My Address is a River; Jesus and John Muir (a novella). From 2005 to 2008 Chris lived in a one-room cabin on Whidbey Island in his home state of Washington, where he completed two books and began work on three more. Living simply and close to Nature he worked on an organic farm, cleared trails, served as a caretaker and worked with at-risk youth. He now lives in the SF Bay Area, teaching, writing and sauntering with his wife Carol. For two years he was the director of the Emergency Shelter in Marin County. He currently teaches at the College of Marin and manages two cooperative houses with independent seniors.
