Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1952, Tom Barnes is a retired Coast Guard warrant officer, a retired employee development specialist from the Smithsonian Institution and he spent a little time teaching public high school business courses in Northern Virginia after he left the Service. He is a totally disabled veteran. His education is extensive. B.A. in Liberal Arts from Mount Saint Mary's RC College, Emmitsburg, MD 1975 B.S. in General Business from University of the State of New York, Regents, in 1995 M.Ed. (Secondary Education) Beaver College, Glenside, PA in 1995 M.A. (Human Resources Management) from Marymount University, Arlington, VA in 2000 M.A. (Human Performance Systems) from Marymount University, Arlington, VA in 2003 Tom studied for a short while toward his Ph.D. in Adult Basic Education at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA earning 26 credits toward that degree. He took classes at both GMU and Virginia Tech. When he was declared totally disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Tom saw that study was no longer possible.
