Emerson was a prominent essayist and poet of the Transcendentalist movement in the 19th century. With other intellectuals, he founded The Transcendental Club in 1836, and thereafter he became known for discounting Biblical miracles and the divinity of Jesus. He also was jeered by crowds for his support of Abolition. Emerson owned the land on which Thoreau lived at Walden Pond and supported hum during his two - year experiment with solitude and reflection.
