This classic book is a large collection of tales and poetry written by Richard Harris Barham, first published in 1837. The stories have their roots in traditional tales of legend and mythology, but are frequently parodist. Immensely popular when first published, "The Ingoldsby Legends" is highly recommended for lovers of folk lore and ghost stories, and would make for a worthy addition to any bookshelf. Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845) was an English Church of England priest, author, and poet. Many classic books such as this are becoming increasingly rare and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Introduction It is sometimes said that a piece of literature needs no introduction beyond a table of dates; but the rule can hardly be insisted upon in the case of the Ingoldsby Legends, for it has been roundly denied that they are literature at all. It would be interesting to know the exact moment at which the advocatus diaboli succeeded in turning the judges to this view. The verdict was finally recorded in 1903, when two very capable critics Dr. Richard Garnett and Mr. Edmund Gosse published a weighty four-volume Record of Engfish Literature, in which all authors worthy of the name were treated at a length proportioned to their value. The lowest in the scale was G. P. R. James, who received a notice some nine words long; but the Ingoldsby Legends and their author were left with Calverley and Locker Lampson among the still lower class whose names are never mentioned at all. A gainst this exclusion I protest. I do not hold a brief for Father I ngoldsby.
