Synopsis

This vintage book contains a complete guide to medical diseases and ailments relating to war. Based on the author's extensive experience in the field, this handbook contains a wealth of information that will be of utility to modern doctors and medical staff. Although old, much of the information contained herein is timeless, making this both a useful resource and a great addition to collections of antiquarian literature. Contents include: "Neuroses Resulting from Emotions", "Shell-shock", "Conditions Predisposing to the Development of Special Symptoms", "Motor Disorders", "Disorders of Speech", "Infective and Other Disorders", "Epidemic Jaundice", "Tetanus", "Gas-Poisoning", etcetera. Many antiquarian texts such as this, especially those dating back to the 1900s and before, are increasingly hard to come by and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author. This volume was first published in 1918.

London and to theN ew Zealand Hospital at Walton-on-T hames, then as a member of theM edical Advisory Committee for the Prevention of Epidemic Disease in theM editerranean Expeditionary Force in Lemnos, and subsequently inS alonica, where I also acted as Consulting Physician to theB ritish Forces. This book is a record of my own observations, amplified by a study of the literature so far as time and opportunity have allowed. I have read most of the papers bearing on the subjects dealt with, which have been published in theE nglish medical journals, together with a number of the more important French contributions and a small number of those which have appeared in the German language. The principal references are given at the end of each chapter. I should like to add, for the benefit of those who are more familiar with my former name of Hertz than with my new name of Hurst, that I have made the change because under present conditions it is natural for one of English birth andE nglish descent for several generations to be unwilling to retain aG erman name.
