This early works is a fascinating look at the life and works of George Eliot, it is a fascinating novel of the period and still an interesting read today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

The following plan is designed to meet the requirements of the Committee of Ten ;namely, The student shall be made familiar with the subject-matter, form, and structure of the book; shall be able to answer simple questions on the life of the author and the literary period in which he lived; and shall be taught to state with clear and accurate expression his own independent criticism of the authors work. This is the bare working rule laid down by the conference, but in addition to this scheme there are certain other aims indispensable to class-room work. Of these ims, the plan here presented points first to the simple object, pleasure. As good kill a man as kill a good book. Reading even a good book from a sense of duty only is of little benefit, and may do as much harm as the reading of literary refuse; for an aversion to the good is already a leaning toward the evil. Students will read what they love, and they must be taught to love that which is worth their admiration. If they feel that the reading of this book is a matter of pleasure as well as of discipline, the drudgery of study is already minimized. Nor need the pleasure in this instance be confined to the reading of Silas Marner only. Comparisons with the works of Dickens, Thackeray, and others will prove a stimulus to outside reading and open up an unknown field of pleasure. The second aim is to procure for classes a solid amount of the old Bible

George Eliot Frontispiece FACING PAGB The Parting.at the Chapel 15 William said meekly, I leave our brethren to judge whether this is the voice of Satan or not. I can do nothing but pray for you, Silas. An Evening at Raveloe 27 He loved the guineas best. .. .H ecounted them and set them up in regular piles, and felt their rounded outline between his thumb and fingers. Silas at The Rainbow 76 The pale, thin figure of Silas Marner was suddenly seen standing in the warm light, uttering no word, but looking round at the company with his strange, unearthly eyes. The Squire and Godfrey 98 The Squire was purple with anger before his son had done speaking, and found utterance difficult. New Year s Eve at the Squires 145 So Solomon, holding his white head on one side and playing vigorously, marched forward at the head of the gay procession into the white parlour.
