Synopsis

This vintage work contains a comprehensive guide to fly fishing and spinning, being a scientific treatment of the subject with 152 illustrations. The subjects discussed within this book will be of interest to the fisherman and will be of assistance to those who, owing to lack of opportunity, are neither experienced nor skilful. It was chiefly written especially for those who are thinking of taking up the sport, but it also includes a wealth of information that will be of interest to the more experienced angler as well. The chapters of this book include: 'Fly Fishing for Trout'; 'A Day's Coaching on a Trout Steam'; 'Water insects and the Rise'; 'The Sense of Trout and How they Affect the Fisherman'; 'Pisciculture and the Natural History of Trout'; 'Wet Fly Fishing', 'Spinning', 'Knots', 'Weeds', and 'General Information', et cetera. This volume was first published in 1915, and is being republished now complete with a new, specially commissioned introduction on the history of fishing.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The delay in publishing this, theS econd Edition ofT he Complete Science ofF ly Fishing andS pinning has been due to the difficulty of obtaining the requisite paper for its many plates and for the text. The careful revision which the author has made will be found to have increased its value to the fisherman. The First Edition of this work has been widely read in America and in the Colonies, and the interest it has created has fully justified the very kind reviews with which its introduction was greeted by the Press. The chapter on The Scales of theS almonidae and theS tory They Tell, has undoubtedly tended to modify the theories advanced somewhat hastily by those who have relied on the marking of salmon scales, as affording a trustworthy indication of the number of times a salmon has spawned. In the First Edition, the author introduced to the public for the first time the virtues and advantages of Muscabane the only infallible anti-insect cream prepared by Messrs. Allen Hanbury. It is pleasing to note that the use of this cream has tended very greatly to the comfort and health, not only of fishermen, and of our soldiers in Europe, Mesopotamia, etc., but of artists, travellers, sportsmen, and those who lead an outdoor life. The diagrams in connection with Fly Casting andS pinning have simplified, to a large extent, those difficult problems which are invariably associated with the efforts of the tyro.

Présentation de l'éditeur

In writing this book the author has endeavoured to confine his text entirely to subjects that he thinks will interest every fisherman and be of assistance to those who, owing to lack of opportunity, are neither experienced nor skilful. Even when he has ventured to express his opinion on controversial subjects he hopes that his views will cause offence to none. The average fisherman may not want to know how to build a rod but he certainly wishes to know how to select one and how to use it. He may not want to make his own flies but he certainly desires to know what flies to get and when and how to use them. He does not want to make his fishing line what he wants is to know how to extend it and how to preserve its usefulness. If it be desirable and necessary to obtain help in order to become a proficient fly fisherman, the author admits the great advantages of personal tuition when it is obtainable. But, on the other hand, he is confident that, by explaining in simple language the science of casting and fishing with the fly or minnow, in similar terms to those which he uses when teaching the student personally, he can help the reader to acquire, by careful attention, a success which will well repay him for his trouble.
