Présentation de l'éditeur

The saving in the first cost of the copper mains being the chief advantage of the system in the eyes of the promoters, the question of the efficiency of this method of supply, except at full load, was not considered. Now, experience has shown that the cost of the annual supply depends largely on the efficiency of the transformers used, and that the loss at light loads is the most important factor in determining this cost. Hence the design of alternate-current transformers needs more careful attention as the demand for higher efficiency arises. I have endeavoured in the following pages to describe as simply as possible the principles involved in the construction of transformers on economic lines, both as regards first cost and power vyasted when working. To the formulas deduced from these principles I have added several others which are useful when determining quickly the dimensions of the various circuits. To enable more to follow the reasoning, higher mathematics have been avoided, although this omission has necessitated the acceptance of certain well-known formulae without proof. The examples worked out and illustrated show the general procedure of designing transformers of different types to fulfil definite conditions. R. W. WEEKES.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
