Synopsis

The recent Trojan Horse scandal, in which 25 Birmingham schools were investigated following allegations that school governors were imposing a hard line Muslim curriculum on schools, was an important moment not only for school governance but equally for the future of a democratic system of education in England. The media coverage of the affair equated what had clearly been governor mismanagement with a narrative of fundamentalism and extremism. The incident highlighted the ways in which the unprecedented, rapid and recent changes to the structures and accountabilities of education in England have created what many have termed a 'systemless system'- a conglomeration of private and public interests which raise considerable challenges in terms of standardisation of provision, quality control and democratic accountability. A system which appears in many ways to be ungovernable in its present form.Taking the Trojan Horse Affair as a starting point, the book examines what questions the affair raised for the governing of education in England and what implications this has for the new government. By examining the political, social and economic contexts surrounding education in 2015, the book explores the politics surrounding school governance and examines the pressures and challenges engendered by the current system and what they may mean for the future of the governance of education in this country.
