Synopsis

The book explains the far-reaching implications of the underappreciated and deliberately misrepresented reorganisation of local government that is already affecting vital public services, including education, health, housing and policing. It illustrates these with examples from across the UK but especially focussing upon the most transformative innovations in the combined local authorities of the so-called 'Northern Powerhouses'. Birmingham and the midlands are also described in detail to show how what is proposed is already affecting people there, as well as a revealing case study of the London Borough of Croydon. The book describes succinctly but in detail the interconnections between these apparently discrete areas of provision to show how the far-reaching changes that are being so hastily introduced will affect the way that people live - and not for the better. Local services are likely to be both more expensive and less efficient for them as well as being less democratic than previously despite the veneer of extended democracy with which directly elected mayors and etc. are presented. It should therefore be of interest to councillors, policy makers, political activists, trade unionists, students, teachers and researchers in Britain and beyond, as well as the general public. It shows how these apparently remote and seemingly parochial measures are already affecting the ways that they live in their communities and neighbourhoods.
