Die Handlung spielt zur Zeit des Dritten Kreuzzugs (1189-1192) w hrend eines Waffenstillstandes in Jerusalem. Als der Jude Nathan von einer Gesch ftsreise zur ckkommt, erf hrt er, dass seine Pflegetochter Recha von einem jungen christlichen Tempelherrn aus dem Feuer seines brennenden Hauses gerettet worden ist. Der Ordensritter wiederum verdankt sein Leben dem muslimischen Herrscher Jerusalems, Sultan Saladin, der ihn als einzigen von zwanzig Gefangenen begnadigt hat, weil er seinem verstorbenen Bruder Assad hnlich sieht. Trotz dieser gl cklichen Umst nde ist der rational denkende Nathan nicht bereit, dahinter ein Wunder zu vermuten, und berzeugt auch Recha davon, dass es sch dlich sei, an das Wirken von Schutzengeln zu glauben. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781) war ein bedeutender Dichter der deutschen Aufkl rung.
