The Moon Beneath the Mountains is the story of two brothers, Temmonin and Damowan, who live in a village in a culture very much like the Native American cultures that lived in the Great Lakes region before Europeans reached America. Tragedy strikes the village when one of their neighbors' entire family is brutally yet mysteriously murdered. The two brothers are sent with others to help find the murderers but they find themselves entangled in a story much more complicated than they could have imagined.

Matt Schellenberg was born on December 7th, 1963 in Detroit, Michigan. At a very early age, he began to draw and paint. Soon, he started to write songs and stories as well. By the time he was in his 20's, he was dabbling and developing his skills in several artistic media including wood sculpture and furniture building, poetry, dance and costume design and creation. For several years (and off and on until the present) he has worked with a band called Territorial Chant (territorialchant.com) with whom he has recorded a handful of albums. In 1993, he performed (along with over 50 musicians and aids) a nine movement performance art piece entitled "The Shrines to YHWH". Each of the nine movements was a shrine to God in honor of His creation of a specific animal. Each included a large sculpture, a piece of music, a poem, a costume and a dance. In 1995, he performed (again with the help of over 40 dancers, musicians and aids) a 94 minute-long rock opera entitled "The Swamp". In early 1996, he and his wife, Carolyn moved to Budapest, Hungary where they worked as missionaries for seven and a half years. They moved back to Carolyn's parents' home in Michigan in 2003 and have lived there ever since with their son (born in 1996) Temmon (himself a budding composer and woodworker) and their daughter Tessa (born in 2006). In 2006, he and his good friend Bill Compeau and his son Temmon and his father Jim Schellenberg established a company called Ark Amps (arkamps.com) which hand-manufactures custom guitar amplifiers and speaker cabinets. They also plan to add instruments (electric guitars and basses, dulcimers, harps, etc...) to their product list. Matt worked on his first novel, "The Moon Beneath the Mountains" for several years before completing the first of many revisions in 1997. He has outlines for future works as well.
