Your research has been very successful. You now need to organize your work into a formal paper and submit to an international conference. How do you start writing? How do you organize your paper? Your paper has been accepted for oral presentation. Now you need to prepare. How do you organize your presentation? Prepare viewgraphs? Engage in small talk at the conference reception? Make new friends? The purpose of this multimedia based material is to help you develop the thinking and language skills necessary to be successful in all of the above areas. Just as language involves more than one person, language is best studied in a small group. This textbook, which accompanies 600MB of on-line lectures and animated viewgraphs, is designed to support a small group (3 to 6 individuals) or slightly larger class (18-24 individuals) studying English for the purposes of technical communication. Emphasis is placed on the key skills of one to one oral and written communication with fellow scientists, listening to and giving technical talks, as well as reading and writing scientific papers. In this approach, ten minutes talks are inter-spaced with small group learning activities that guide you in discussing applying what you have just learned. In such a setting, one individual acts as the facilitator controlling the flow of the recorded audio lectures and animations, as well as providing guidance in the small group activities. Jonathon David White was born in Oakville, Canada but has since lived in many other countries. Even during his undergraduate days at McMaster University, he already had a cosmopolitan outlook on life, being active in the Chinese Christian Fellowship. After obtaining his M. Div from Trinity International University in the USA, and Ph.D. from McMaster University in Canada, he worked and taught in China, Japan, Malaysia (Multimedia University) and finally Taiwan - where he had earlier met and married Wu Xiuman. They have two daughters, Aien (Charity Grace) and Liang-En (Ruth Ann) and two sons, Youen (Johann Donald) and Lien (leon Joshua). They now reside in Taoyuan, Taiwan where he is teaching at Yuan Ze University in the Department of Electro-Optical Engineering.
