Synopsis

A richly argued portrait of Jonathan Edwards, showing how his thoughts grew from his life and times.

This scholarly biography brings Edwards to life by weaving his writings into the person behind the sermons. It traces his growth from childhood through his parish ministry, the Great Awakening, and his later philosophical theology, always asking how he thought and why he thought that way. With careful use of his own works, the author builds a nuanced portrait of a man who helped shape American religion and thought.

Through four well‑defined periods, the book blends history, theology, and personal detail. It examines his family, his leadership in Northampton, the revival that shook New England, and his later philosophical tractates. It also considers the social and ecclesiastical forces that shaped his ideas, including his approach to grace, free will, and divine sovereignty.

  • A clear account of Edwards’ life as a parish minister, revival participant, and later thinker.

  • Thoughtful analysis of his key theological positions, including grace, justification, and the Trinity.

  • Context on the Great Awakening, its successes and controversies, and its lasting impact.

  • A bridge between biography and philosophy, showing how Edwards’ ideas evolved across his career.

Ideal for readers of American religious history, theology, and the philosophy of religion who want a grounded, readable entry into Edwards’ life and thought.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Edwards works to which references are made is known as the Worcester edition, in four volumes, published in New York in 1847. I have drawn freely from his Life by Dr. S. E. Dwight published in 1830. Valuable as this work is, it does not constitute an adequate biography. Much that would throw light upon Edwards his tory is withheld from publication. It is greatly to be regretted also that there is no complete edition of his works. But in the method which I have followed I have not lacked for abundance of material. I have endeavored to reproduce Edwards from his books, making his treatises, in their chronological order, contribute to his portraiture as a man and as a theologian, a task which has not been hereto fore attempted. I have thought that something more than a mere recountal of facts was demanded in order to justify the endeavor to rewrite his life. What we most desire to know is, what he thought and how he came to think as he did. The aim of my work is a critical one, with this inquiry always in view.
