Synopsis

Psalmody and Worship reveals how the psalms moved from temple liturgy to synagogue practice, shaping Jewish public worship.

This scholarly survey traces the transformation of temple songs into everyday prayers, doxologies, and readings that structured the synagogue service across cultures and time.

The book examines the central role of Psalms in ancient rites, their integration with scriptural readings, and how musical elements and liturgical formulas carried the memory of temple worship into the diasporic communities. It also considers how later traditions and other cultural influences shaped the way psalms are sung, recited, and used in worship today.

  • How temple liturgy influenced the early synagogue service and its order.
  • Ways psalms became prayers, hymns, and public ritual within Jewish worship.
  • The musical instruments, modes, and performance practices that accompanied psalms.
  • The lasting impact of temple-centered psalmody on modern synagogue worship.

Ideal for readers of Jewish history, liturgy, and religious studies who want a clear view of how sacred song evolved across centuries.

The author has, however, sought to lay more stress on matters which are, as a rule, not dealt with, or only incidentally touched upon, inC ommentaries on the Psalms, and the like. Excepting in the case of the introductory chapter and the final one, use has been v.
