Synopsis

PREFACE. TN committing this work to the press and the public,-the result of much labour and anxiety,-I may profess, withottt presumption, that my first object is the good of my Irish-speaking country* men, and the glory of God thereby- I thought it necessary that I should have steadilv hi view to afford the means, to those unaccus-tomcd to speak Irish from their youth, of speaking and writing in a manner intelligible to the people as they at present use and understand their own language. Having this object belbre mc, I had no temptation to comply with that absurd humour for antiquity which would have us go back even in our orthography to a period which had no standard, and nothing but diversity itself. I have not taken all the words in Johnson's English Dictionary, for this would make the book too expensive: but, as a general rule, I have omitted only such as are of unusual occurrence in the English language, and. therefore unnecessary for intercourse with the peasantry of Ireland.
