Synopsis

The hidden influence of the stars on language, literature, and science

Discover how beliefs about the stars shaped everyday speech, literary allusions, and the rise of careful, observational astronomy. This book traces astrology from its widespread past to the modern view that rejects its predictive claims, linking cultural language to scientific progress without losing sight of the people who lived through those changes. Astrology once braided into daily life and literature, yet many old ideas were challenged and abandoned. The narrative shows why these beliefs mattered, how thinkers argued for and against them, and how scientific methods gradually took their place in understanding the heavens.

  • How astrological terms entered ordinary language and influenced classic texts
  • Stories of ancient and medieval debates, thinkers, and rulers who engaged with astrology
  • The shift from myth and prediction to observation and evidence in astronomy
  • Connections between celestial events and the development of scientific thinking
Ideal for readers who want a clear, accessible look at the clash and collaboration between belief and science in the history of astronomy.

Présentation de l'éditeur

A stronomy, with many, does not reside in the wonders revealed to us by the science, but in the lore and legends connected with its history, the strange fancies with which in old times it has been associated, the half-forgotten myths to which it has given birth. In our own times also, Astronomy has had its myths and fancies, its wild inventions, and startling paradoxes. My object in the present series of papers has been to collect together the most interesting of these old and new Astronomical myths, associating with them, in due proportion, some of the chief marvels which recent Astronomy has revealed to us. To the former class belong the subjects of the first four and the last five essays of the present series, while the remaining essays belong to the latter category.
