Synopsis

Unlock the secrets of the Old Masters’ painting methods and learn durable, lasting color.

This book examines the practical teknik behind great oil paintings. It explains why many traditional techniques endure while modern methods can fall short, and it shows how to test colors and vehicles to predict long‑term results. The discussion blends historical notes with hands‑on guidance, focusing on how masters built up tones, glazes, and flesh colors without sacrificing clarity or longevity. You’ll find clear steps on retouching, final varnish, and working with a white palette that stays true under oil. It also covers how to judge color quality, manage drying times, and apply reinforced techniques to protect art over time.

  • How base colors, glazing, and dead coloring contribute to a lasting finish
  • Practical color testing, including sun exposure to reveal true durability
  • Retouching, varnish choices, and the case for a white, oil‑friendly palette
  • Approaches used by Old Masters to achieve lifelike flesh tones and depth
Ideal for artists, restorers, and students who want a grounded, studio‑tested view of classic painting methods.

Excerpt from The Secret of the Old Masters

In this little book I have undertaken to lay before the reader the fruits of the labor of twenty-five years. As soon as I could understand and appreciate the splendors of the Grand Masters of painting, I had begun to form a determination to discover the technical principles, methods, and material that enabled the Masters to produce their work. Years ago, I never had any real satisfaction when I did paint a fairly good study head, because I felt instinctively that it was in no sense related to the technic of the Masters. Therefore, the search for the Masters' technic became for me an all-absorbing life work to the exclusion of all else. This life work was more or less an injury and loss to me in many ways.
