This rigorous study analyzes the will by its two moving parts—impulse and inhibition—and shows how voluntary actions arise from a complex brain mechanism.
It explains how the will can be impaired, and what that reveals about normal functioning, with careful attention to pathology and method. The author treats the will as a true subject of scientific inquiry, not a metaphysical claim. It traces the evolution of volition, the limits of freedom, and how desires, reflexes, and ideas become coordinated into action.

It has seemed to me that there would be some profit in treating these questions in the same spirit, but under another form, that of dissolution. I propose, then, in this work to attempt for the will what I have formerly done for the memory; to study its anomalies, and to draw from this study conclusions regarding its normal state. In very many respects the question is less easy ;the term will designates something more vague than the term memory. Whether one considers memory as a function, a property, or a faculty, it remains none the less a stable mode of being, a psychic disposition, regarding which all the world can come to an agreement. The will, on the contrary, resolves itself into volitions, each one of which is an element, an unstable form of activity, a resultant varying according to the causes that produce it. Beyond this first difficulty there is another which may appear greater still, but of which we will not hesitate to summarily disembarrass ourselves.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of the human will, exploring its complexities and vulnerabilities through the lens of its impairments. Drawing upon observations of both healthy and diseased individuals, the author sheds light on the mechanisms of volition, examining how our thoughts, emotions, and experiences shape our capacity to act and make choices. The author situates the study of the will within the broader context of evolving psychological thought. Rather than adhering to traditional notions of the will as a mystical force, this book adopts a scientific approach, grounding its analysis in the principles of physiology and neurology. By investigating cases of impaired volition, the author unravels the intricate interplay between our conscious intentions and the underlying biological processes that govern our actions. The book delves into themes of impulse control, decision-making, and the influence of individual character on our ability to exert willpower. Through compelling case studies and insightful observations, the author illuminates the delicate balance between conscious intent and the unconscious forces that shape our behavior. The exploration of abulia, a condition characterized by an inability to act upon one's desires, offers a profound reflection on the nature of free will and the factors that can disrupt our agency. Ultimately, this book challenges us to reconsider our understanding of the will, not as a singular, monolithic entity, but as a complex interplay of psychological and physiological processes. The insights presented within its pages offer a valuable perspective on the human experience, highlighting the intricate mechanisms that govern our actions and the factors that contribute to our ability to navigate the challenges of life with purpose and resilience.
