Explore the basis and reach of evolution and how its ideas illuminate life today. This book presents evolution as a real, practical guide to understanding the living world. It links scientific method, evidence, and everyday thought to show why evolution matters for how we live.
The work emphasizes that science advances by organizing observations into reliable laws, applicable across time and thought. It argues for using common sense to interpret the natural world and to inform personal and social choices.
Ideal for readers of science and philosophy who seek a clear, evidence‑based look at evolution.

The present volume consists of a series of eight addresses delivered as the Hewitt Lectures of Columbia University at Cooper Union inN ew York City during the months ofF ebruary and March, 1907. The purpose of these lectures was to describe in concise outline theD octrine of Evolution, its basis in the facts of natural history, and its wide and universal scope. They fall naturally into two groups. Those of the first part deal with matters of definition, with the essential characteristics of living things, and, at greater length, with the evidences of organic evolution. The lectures of the second group take up the various aspects of human evolution as a special instance of the general organic process. In this latter part of the series, the subject of physical evolution is first considered, and this is followed by an analysis of human mental evolution; the chapter on social evolution extends the fundamental principles to a field which is not usually considered by biologists, and its purpose is to demonstrate the efficiency of the genetic method in this department as in all others; finally, the principles are extended to what is called the higher human life, the realm, namely, of ethical, religious, and theological ideas and ideals.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on the prevailing scientific idea that all plant and animal life has evolved naturally to adapt to the conditions of their environment. The author starts from the basis that life is essentially mechanical and comprises three unique properties: peculiar chemical composition, power to repair itself, and capability for growth and reproduction. Through detailed examples of locomotive and steamship evolution, the author demonstrates that organisms are mechanical devices not exempt from natural laws, and their adaptation traits result from natural forces acting on their intrinsic mechanical designs over a long time. The author presents a systematic scheme of five categories â" classification, comparative anatomy, comparative development, paleontology, and geographical distribution â" as the pillars of scientific evidence that support the evolution theory. For the author, evolution is more than an organic process; its mechanism and the principles deduced from its study have much broader relevance for understanding and interpreting the world and our place in it.
