Discover how travels, friendships, and belief shaped one of the 19th century's most independent writers. This biography brings Borrow's voice and life into clear focus for modern readers.
This careful portrait explores the real person behind the books you may know, from the Spanish years to his famous village writings. It looks at how his journeys, his translators’ work, and his strong convictions influenced what he wrote and how he lived.

Note The late Dr. W. I. Knapp s Life (J ohn Murray) and Mr. Watts-D unton sprefaces are the fountains of information about Borrow, and I have clearly indicated how much I owe to them. What I owe to my friend, Mr. Thomas Seccombe, cannot be so clearly indicated, but his prefaces have been meat and drink to me. I have also used Mr. R. A. J. Walling ssympathetic and interesting George Borrow. The British and Foreign Bible Society has given me permission to quote from Borrow sletters to the Society, edited in igii by the Rev. T. H. Darlow; and Messrs. T. C. Cantrill and J. Pringle have put at my disposal their publication of Borrow sjournal of his second Welsh tour, wonderfully annotated by themselves (Y Cymmrodor, 1910). These and other sources are mentioned where they are used and in the bibliography.

The author explores the intricate relationship between the man's life and his writings, revealing how his personal experiences shaped his creative output. The book examines how the man's own idealized self, his desire for adventure, and his extraordinary memory, influenced the way he presented his life in his books. It explores the author's fascination with the Romani people and his encounters with them, a theme that runs through several of his works. The book also discusses the author's unconventional and at times contradictory perspectives on truth and storytelling, revealing his willingness to manipulate facts in order to create a more compelling narrative. Through a close analysis of the author's work, this book offers a unique perspective on the complexities of self-representation and the interplay between reality and fiction in autobiography.
