Synopsis

A brave, curious boy and a mother whose choices shape a quiet, turbulent path toward maturity.

A storm-tossed Devon village frames the opening of this Victorian tale. A solemn, eleven-year-old boy studies hard, guided by a patient tutor, while the world outside glows with late-afternoon light and the sea’s restless energy. The room holds careful ritual and restrained emotion as the boy’s resolve to learn meets the pull of a troubled family life. As a mother prepares to leave, a fierce mix of love, fear, and defiance fills the night. Her words hint at losses and choices that test loyalty, hope, and the meaning of courage. The boy watches, sensing danger and dignity in her farewell, and the two share a bond charged with unspoken truth. The book follows their fragile dynamic and the larger questions it raises about duty, belief, and what it means to grow up.

  • Develops a boy’s inner life as he balances study, worry, and a longing for his mother’s return
  • Explores themes of faith, respectability, and the costs of adult choices
  • Pairs intimate family moments with a vivid, atmospheric Victorian setting
  • Offers a compassionate look at resilience, courage, and the pull between love and obligation
Ideal for readers drawn to character-driven stories set in a bygone era, where quiet moments reveal deep truths about family and duty.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Devon. Summer had worn the garb of winter in a freakish fit of mockery and masquerade; and even among the sheltered orchards of the deeply-embowered valley of Combmartin, many a tough and gnarled branch of many a sturdy apple-tree laden with reddening fruit, had been beaten to the ground by the fury of the blast and the sweeping gusts of rain. Only now, towards late afternoon, were the sullen skies beginning to clear. The sea still lashed the rocks with angry thuds of passion, but the strength of the wind was gradually sinking into a mere breeze, and a warm saffron light in the west showed where the sun, obscured for so many hours, was about to hide his glowing face altogether for the night, behind the black vizor of our upward-moving earth.
