En 2004, l'auteur de ce livre a participé à un voyage de liaison avec son ami Michael, et leurs deux pères. Les quatre ont voyagé en Afrique et en Europe et l'expérience a inspiré Roderick à écrire ce livre. Roderick emmène avec précision le lecteur « Full Circle » à travers un voyage de l'histoire de l'Afrique depuis le moment où elle était l'envie du monde, à travers son ère sombre d'esclavage et de colonialisme, à son retour en tant que continent le plus important du monde au cours du 21e siècle.
