This book encourages teachers, parents, grandparents, and volunteers who work with children to expect more. It focuses on the skills children will need to compete in a highly competitive global economy. From systems thinking, to interpreting complex visual images, to integrative thinking our children need a whole new skill set. For too long science and social studies have been moved to the back burner. Ironically these subjects hold great interest and opportunity to investigate concepts in depth. We need to bring them to center stage. Throughout the book the author provides many concrete examples of ways for teachers and parents to engage children in meaningful conversation and problem solving. Somewhere along the way we seem to have stopped challenging children and started enabling them instead. Perhaps this is through no fault of our own? As teachers and parents we genuinely care about children. We feel for them when they are sick, when they are bullied or when they are struggling. Quite simply it is our nature to protect. With the best of intentions we tend to try and eliminate the struggle. But the struggle is essential to growth and a personal sense of accomplishment. Biographie de l'auteur

Anne Grall Reichel is a passionate educator. She specializes in curriculum development and the professional development of outstanding teachers. She currently focuses on curriculum development with an emphasis on higher order thinking and transfer of concepts to new situations. Anne is interested in meaningful integration of science and social studies concepts with reading and writing. Anne currently consults with school districts throughout northern Illinois and serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Education Department at Lake Forest College. Anne served as the Science Coordinator for the Lake County Regional Office of Education. Under her direction the first Lawrence Hall of Science GEMS site was established in Lake County, Illinois. She also established the Lake County Alliance for Science to support elementary teachers in the teaching of science. Anne has served as the Director of Teacher Services at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Under her leadership a Museum Partnership Program was developed to support Chicago teachers in earning science endorsements. Anne has taught at both the middle school and elementary levels. Anne earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership with a focus on Teaching for Conceptual Integration. In recent years Anne has become increasingly concerned about the need to have clarity of focus in our expectations for all students. Her work focuses on suggestions for both teachers and parents. She believes we should "expect more" of ourselves as adults working with children.
