Currently Doctor Patten teaches courses on memory, neuroscience, and logic at Rice University and at the Women's Institute of Houston. Formerly he was Vice Chair of the department of Neurology and Chief of Nerve and Muscle diseases at the Baylor College of Medicine. He was a member of the team of physicians who discovered the L-DOPA treatment for Parkinson's Disease and has been a visiting professor at the University of Montpellier in France (1980-81), the Charcot Clinic in Paris (1990-91), and at the Karolinska in Stockholm. He holds an A.B. from Columbia College summa cum laude and graduated second in his class from Columbia's Medical School with an MD. He interned at Cornell, did his Neurology training at the Neurological Institute of New York where he was Chief Resident Neurologist. Then he was the Memory Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and set up the first memory clinic and memory consultation service in America. After completing his draft obligated service as the assistant chief of medical neurology at the National Institutes of Health, he joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine where he published over 100 scientific papers and where he was the vice chair of the Department of Neurology and the chief of Nerve and Muscle diseases. Doctor Patten has eight non-medical books in print: Three novels, two books of poetry, one travel book, and two books on informal logic. Since 1994, Doctor Patten has been included in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
